Lewis Hamilton’s debut season with Ferrari has been far from smooth. Aside from a sprint race win at the Chinese Grand Prix, the seven-time world champion has struggled to match the pace of his teammate, Charles Leclerc, across the opening half of the season. But according to 1997 Formula 1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve, the true test for Hamilton lies ahead — particularly with the major regulatory changes set to redefine the sport in 2026.

“Lewis has entered a completely different world. He’s spent his career in teams with well-defined, structured Anglo-German systems like McLaren and Mercedes. Ferrari operates differently — and I think he’s already starting to feel that shift. He looks visibly deflated. Ferrari often suffers from internal disarray, especially when it comes to decision-making and communication — even over team radio.That disorganisation certainly doesn’t help his transition. While a real showdown with Leclerc may begin in earnest in 2025, the real pressure point will come in 2026, when the new technical regulations take effect. That will be a clean slate for everyone — and there’ll be no excuse tied to an inherited car design. Hamilton’s move to Ferrari was met with enormous media attention and fanfare. Expectations were sky-high. But so far, the results have been disappointing — and the scrutiny will only intensify from here.”
